when a man is tired of London
Last week we had such a lovely day out. Its was national independent record day (I know..weird) and my husband is a music fanatic. there are a few very famous independent record stores in Soho apparently., sister ray records being the one Kristian wanted to visit,so we got on the train bright and early for a wander.
we took salted cashews as a snack. those things are fatal for me . I ate so many and forgot to bring the water. was so thirsty by the time we got to Charing Cross.
We stopped for a latte (me) , a mint tea (healthy husband) and an apple juice (small child drink) it was a quirky little coffee place in Soho called the flat white. We even saw that mildly famous Indian man there. I of course have no idea what his name is. Hardeep I think. Also unless you live here you probably would not recognise him anyhow. My little obsession with minor celebrities continues..
Whilst Kristian browsed through sister ray records , Lily and I walked down the street taking in a vintage clothing store filled with all sorts of lovelies , from Vivienne Westwood shoes to cute little dresses. A bit further down the road I came across this amazing fabric shop (above, the cloth house) I have recently inherited Kristian nans old pfaff sewing machine ands once its all serviced I plan to sew again. This shop had the most unbelievable fabrics. You know when you go into a shop and you don't know where to look next. you just sort of run around oooing and aahhhing.

We then wandered back to meet Kristian where Lily decided to share her robotic dancing with us all. She loves dancing and music. I know all children do but she really has a thing for it. she dances to everything. This week I am planning to take my camera to her diddi dance class and i will share all the cuteness that erupts there. She is going to be starting ballet classes soon at her diddi dance teachers recommendation. apparently she has a good line and natural dance movement.
the streets of London were bustling even more than usual due to the balmy weather and we had such a wonderful time just wandering and exploring. we got ourselves some take away sushi (parents) and a salmon sandwich from Pret (small child's favorite) and found a lovely sunny square to eat them in.
Just off carnaby street we found this little shopping place with lovely cafes and interesting shops.

then of course finished off the day with the best ice cream in London. Look I don't know if its the best , but its up there I assure you. I had pistachio and lost the feeling in my legs for minutes. wondrous stuff. Theres always something new to see in London...

new hair
This is Moi with my lovely friend Sandi at dinner club. My monthly girly night that involves food and wine in copious amounts. I cut my my hair last week into this bob. I am happy with it bar this awful fringe envy I have. I really , really want a fringe. i have for ages. I may just throw caution to the wind one of these days.
We had a fabulous evening at this Italian restaurant. I am sure gourmet goddesses will be updated soon. The host and owner , Stefano, was just so funny and even told me I could not have Parmesan on my prawn pasta. (noh..it ruin the taste you cannot have )

a life in pictures
10 things about me
I saw the princess and the frog today with Kristian and Lily. Old fashioned disney animation. Of course in true disney fashion , beings died. The whole time I was thinking. please don't ask me about dying. please don't ask me about dying. she didn't ask me about dying but she enjoyed it thoroughly , as did I.
I am cooking a lamb for the first time in my life tomorrow and you know I think I may be vegetarian. I took ages choosing one that did not make me feel queasy. Don't worry its all free range , very expensive sort of lamb. I think I am looking forward to the choccie eggs more. yum.
less than 2 months till I head out to Cape Town again. So much to look forward to there.
lily is into role playing in a big way. either shes the teacher and i am the little girl, or shes the doctor and I am the patient with a sore tummy and cough, or shes the waitress and I am the customer who orders randomly from a wooden board she has got and then eat anything she brings me WITHOUT complaint. Once I pretended to complain and was chucked out of the establishment.
Planning a trip to spitalfields before i leave for cape town. Its my mission for this year to go to north and west London more and explore. Hampstead heath (hope I don't see George Micheal) is also up there with things to do. On one of those days I will be going to lemonia., this amazing Greek restaurant in primrose hill. I went for our friend , Jason's birthday a few years ago and I can remember the taste of that delicious food.
I am looking for a quinoa recipe if anyone has one. I had it a while ago but was unimpressed , however its so good for you so I want to try again
waterfall cardigans are my new favorite thing. admittedly I only have 1 but i have my eye on 1 or 2 more. they are so handy and look so lovely on. I have also started wearing leggings. They are so comfortable and worn correctly they look very flattering and lovely. FYI some legging wearing people..Long flowing tops are the look. not short tight ones .
Over the rainbow has started on the telly. Andrew Lloyd webbers "casting" for a Dorothy for the wizard of oz. i love it already. if i were a man I would be gay.
I am turning 33 next month. Its got to be a good year. two 3's! i have a feeling a lot will happen to me in my 33rd year. i was playing with my tarot cards a few nights ago and got some interesting things coming up. How I wish I could have my friend Caroline do a reading for me.
its still tulip season and you know how I love the tulips. I will post some photos of the tulips i got for Easter and you can all share in the pretty joy of them.

skylon
I went to a fabulous restaurant last night called Skylon. Its another Conran restaurant ( went to Quaglianos with dinner club) My dear friend Sandi turned...27 is it Sands? She arrived looking fabulous in her "hoochie mama" dress and heels . We went to the bar which overlooks the thames and had cocktails and a glass of champagne. I managed to eat so many of the nibbles that they were replenished 3 times ..blush..
If you ever come to London or even if you live here already its worth a visit for a special occasion.
On that note Happy birthday Sandi. !

on my mind
So I have been a little uninspired recently. Not blogging , not being creative etc.
One thing that is constant with me is my web surfing and love of pretty things. here's a few things I have been looking at
yes this is a moses basket. We are hoping to have another baby but so far I am just frustrated and obsessed (ha ha ..) but we never got a bassinet for lily and I have no idea why. they look so lovely and are so great to move around. I like this one from Marks. very simple. perhaps a bit more girly than boyish though...
Monsoon . without a doubt my favorite clothing store. quite ethnic at times which is probably why its up my street. Their fabric is sublime. If someone could just have a nice evening wedding I could wear this off shoulder bright coral dress.
Or a garden party or ladies lunch. How divine is this one. this is like my perfect dress. I totally love it.

Now here is a weird thing. Many of you probably think thee are ugly but I have a clog wooden heel thing. These are on trend for the season and I would know, I sold 3 pairs over the weekend. they are jones bootmaker. I can picture myself standing in one place or sitting in them all night!
Cath Kidson. Love her vintage prints and all her products, from homewares to bags. this bucket bag is on my list of things I need. but FYI if I EVER fall pregnant I want the baby bag.. maybe this could do both. anyhoo I love it.
and that ladies and gentlemen is my short list of things I have looked at online today. Hope you enjoyed

just for kids
If you don't have children or never have to entertain children then look away now as this won't interest you.
Colouring in. what child does not like to colour? Mine is colouring mad and can get through a colouring book in next to no time as at 3 attention to detail is not so important to her. I did however see a picture my lovely little god daughter , Sarah was colouring the other day and was so proud of all that colouring in the lines I saw! (you see we don't only gush abut our own children ,but our friends too)
So if your little one watches cbeebies they will be familiar with the characters and would love to colour them in. go to the cbeebies website and click on colouring and you will find loads of pages you can print out for them to colour.
books. so I have more books to recommend for children. I have recently discovered Emily Gravett. I think I like the books more than lily though. The illustrations are so beautiful. We have meerkat mail at the moment and its lovely.
The wild things. Its just been made into a film but the book is much loved. Its got great illustrations and Lily is strangely amazed by "the wild things". helped by the fact that her daddy got an app for her where she can play with the character on screen Carol is her favorite. And Isla she tells me tonight.
I am still a huge winnie the witch fan. cant get enough of those books.
Micro scooters. I am saving for one of these for lily. They are small, lightweight and fold up. I see kids of 18 months scootering all over on these things. they are great for school runs or trips to the park or just in your back yard. great for coordination and ..well..fun!
hope those few thumbs up will help.

this is what inspires me
Caroline told us her inspirations and thereby inspired me to share mine
plants and flowers and gardening inspires me. In the past few years I have become so excited by gardening. I cant quite believe it myself. Today I had a strange feeling about me. I was nervous and sad all in one. I decided to go out and pull out some dead plants in my garden and just tidy it up ready for my spring planting plan. the more I worked and dug and saw some bulbs coming through the better I felt. gardening earths me and it makes me feel grounded and happy. planting and watching things grow gives me great inspiration .
creative artistic working with my hands inspires me. whether its sculpting , sewing , drawing , beading or scrapbooking. I like creating objects of beauty.
architecture and buildings . When I walk down the southbank in London I love the skyline. I love the gerkin blending into st Paul's cathedral. I love the building my husband works in in Greenwich . its the old naval college. its quite inspirational. and don't even get me started on Paris.
the people in my life inspire me every day. My mum inspires me by lifting my spirits on a weekly basis at the moment. she must feel like its a full time job but she still does it because she my mum . she inspires me to be a brilliant mum like her. My husband inspires me with his absolute dedication to his interests and hobbies and his natural parenting ability is quite astounding. I have friends and family that bring out the best in me.
my daughter . I want to be the best mum to her. I want to make the right choices for her. her kind sweet nature is an inspiration to me. I am loving watching her grow up
people with something about them inspire me. I like people with quirks and interests. I like a sense of style. I like it when people love things. when they are passionate about things. Don't be wishy washy I don't love anything blah blah.
food. beautiful , sumptuous food. lovely crisp wine , sparkling prosecco, decadent desserts . what on earth could be more inspirational than that?

Make do and mend

I have this gorgeous coat . Its red cord , knee length with beautiful rose buttons. Thing is the buttons keep coming off due to them being metal and perhaps a little sharp. This has resulted in me losing 2 buttons. I filed down and sewed the 3 remaining buttons onto the coat and am now on the look out for similar buttons that I can sew on . Thing is I mentioned to someone that I had done this and they said to me ..what a waste of time I would just toss the coat.
Really? Have we come so far that perfectly good coats are" tossable " just because we cant be bothered to sew on a few buttons.
I am breaking out against this behavior. This disposable society I live in. I love vintage clothing and have items of clothing that are 60 years old that I wear. If a top gets a hole in it. I sew the hole! It was not that long ago that clothing and food was rationed and you had to darn that pair of socks. I am not suggesting you darn your socks because that would just be silly , but I do think we should think twice before chucking things out. perhaps we can reuse or change the item to be useful again thereby not filling the worlds rubbish dumps with last years presents.
I had a top with this very tight arm band..and I hate a tight arm band . But the rest of the top fitted well and I liked it. So I had a think and went and got a bit of ribbon. I intend to cut off said tight armband and put the ribbon there and transform the top. these are just small sewing jobs that anyone can learn to do.
One step up from that is other household goods As the saying goes. one mans meat is another mans poison and just because you don't like something does not mean that no one will. A perfect example of this was a wardrobe I found on the side of the road. You may laugh but it was so perfectly timed. We had just moved into our new house that did not posses a linen cupboard, or any cupboard actually. I was looking for a small wardrobe with shelves at the bottom to put my linen and towels in. This wardrobe had to be a certain size however to fit on the landing. I came back from work one evening and on the pavement someone had put a wardrobe all ready for someone to take. I measured it and now its recycled in my home. I recently did the same thing with Lily's old car seat and someone recycled that within the hour.
Now don't get me wrong I am not being all condescending, I love shopping. really love it. everyone who knows me knows my love of pretty things and clothing but I guess I just want to live a less wasteful life and I want to learn how to use what I have. I want to sew buttons , I want to grow my own herbs . In between I intend to shop and buy beautiful things and new clothing but only things of quality. Not disposable chuck away things. I think in that respect our ancestors got it all right.

I was over at pink granite and she recommended a site called awkward family photos . If you fancy a giggle its well worth it. do browse all the way through because in my opinion the funniest ones were 4 pages in. Look out for the" hockey mom" I laughed so hard a tiny bit of wee came out...

whats new..
2.I love Emma Bridgewater's crockery and kitchen wear. I do worry the mugs are a little thick for me but they are so pretty. here's the tulip one. she does crockery, textiles ,tins etc.

3.eagerly awaiting the birth of Veronica and Stevens baby and wishing I could be there to see her.
4. I have to admit this week has been my worst one since coming back from my amazing holiday. its long enough now for me to be missing everyone and feeling very down about everything.
5. Applied for lily to attend a nursery school class at the school near us . It felt right so will have to keep fingers crossed she gets a place.
6.waiting to see if we got any world cup tickets. the draw was on Monday. I hope for Kristian he got the Italy game.
7 . I am making an exploding box. its a scrapbooking project. I am doing a black and white one with black and white photos for Kristian's desk. Been enjoying it so much. I am at my happiest when being creative. next project. beading stars that my mum is sending me.
8. Just so wanting to go and see Andrew lloyd webbers new musical. the follow up to phantom of the opera. Love never dies. I will go and see it before the year is up.
9. wondering how long printer cartridges last?
10. hoping that this year is going to turn around and be good for all my friends and loved ones that have been struggling, and for myself. a few steps closer to my goals would be good. until then though I must remind myself to keep living the life I have now.

an emotive issue
When you first fall pregnant it never fully dawns on you the magnitude of this responsibility you have. My first whiff of mother guilt was my inability to breastfeed. perhaps I should have persevered longer? truth be told I now know I did my level best and no Mrs visiting midwife your breast is best pep talk did not help!
Then its all the guilt over C sections and other mothers telling you about drug free births. If you delve deeper all this is actually your own insecurity . you have been thrown into a new job with no training. You call on mothers and friends for advice and help but at some point the buck stops here.
After 3 and a half years of being a mum i think I have done well. I have navigated weaning , milestones ,potty training and discipline . I have a delightful child who is affectionate and imaginative and a joy.
Now I have hit a stumbling block. School.
I love having Lily with me and I stay at home to be with her so I left the playschool thing a little late by English standards. Lily was 3 when she started going and has been going to a little playschool for 6 months. she goes twice a week and is still settling. In the interim all the children of her age have moved on to nursery. this is attached to the school and is 5 days a week for 2 hours. After deciding I was not going to do nursery I looked around today and I had to be honest with myself. Lily cannot do this playschool for a year. She is the oldest there and its simply not stretching her. she needs the children to be her age or older. Now I have to see if by some miracle a nursery will accept her after the admissions have closed.
In some ways I feel pressurized to follow this path. She will be starting school in January next year, if we are still living here, and then she will be in the school system.5 days a week. Do I really want to put her there now. I so wish other children between 3 and 4 were going to playschool. I just feel like I am always on the back foot here.
Let me tell you about the school admissions system here as well. I had to apply for a reception place for lily by the end of last month. I had to put up to 4 schools of my choice down and they will TRY to place her at one of them. if they are oversubscribed (which all the good ones are) they will place her where there is room! Hows that for stress.
Never have I felt more ill at ease about something. I know for certain I dont want Lily going to school in London for more than a year . Am am now so aware that my choices at this stage will affect her. I want her to go to a school she feels comfortable in. She is a sensitive soul and the thought of her being piled in with some boisterous children fills me with dread. you see I don't want to let her go. Its my taurean nature. Perhaps this is a lesson for me. I hope I learn fast.

lisa and some chickpeas
this is my dear friend Lisa with Lily at boulders beach. I have known her since she was 5 years old and have babysat for her many, many times. she is now 20 GULP. She is a lovely , kind young lady who I adore . Lily was very keen too and said the other day after we had been sitting in silence for a while. "mummy, do you remember at the beach when Lisa painted my nails blue? that was a nice day"
Here she is with her lovely boyfriend , Ivan and a lobster....oh no its not a lobster its my husband the day after a boys weekend away in a very sunny place.
This is the recipe that Lisa posted on my facebook wall. I am yet to try it but with my chickpea thing I have going I thought it apt. thanks lisi for the recipe and for being so thoughtful
xx

humous
Humous has to be one of my very favorite foods. Its so yummy and filling as well as being very good for you. If you have children I think you cant go wrong getting them to like it . its such an easy lunch to prepare.
Because we were eating so much of the stuff in our vegetarian household I decided I was going to make it. I am sure most of you know how but I will give you my recipe anyhow.
serve as a dip with grilled pita breads or crackers ( I am partial to a pumpkin seed ryvita)
put into a sandwich as a delicious filling with salads or even just eat it just like that..like I do on occasion on a piece of celery. Its addictive
This is the method I use for 1 tin of chickpeas but I usually do 2 tins due to my greedy nature.
1 tin of chickpeas chucked into a food processor with a peeled piece of garlic. whizz up a bit before adding 2 tablespoons of tahini (sesame seed paste) a tablespoon or 2 of the chickpea brine and juice of 2 lemons.
continue whizzing adding a drizzle of olive oil continually with some rock salt and pepper (to taste- note it does need the salt and pepper I think) when its blended and a good consistency (about 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil I think) you can decant into a tupperware container and have a ready snack or lunch.
enjoy!

the last 2 months...
on the 15th November 2009 I set off to my homeland for my first christmas holiday in Cape Town with my family for 3 years. It had been planned and looked forward to for many months. This is what happens when you live the life I have for the last 5 years. You look forward to your next trip home.
With all this anticipation it had no choice but to be a magical, unforgettable holiday, and that it was.
Lily and I arrived on my mums 60th birthday. After a cramped and very long flight ,crisp, clear and sunny Cape Town was a sight for sore eyes as was my overly excited mother , dad , brother ,Veronica , steven and our little Sarah.
We celebrated mums birthday at wang thai on the milnerton beach front with some yummy sushi and cold ,dry white wine. Mum had her 60th party the saturday following that at My brother , Andrew's restaurant he manages , primi piatti in the waterfront. We had a blast . Lily came with for the evening and was so good , even falling asleep on some cushions her uncle put down for her. I got totally tiddly and was giggling much better with my friends Caroline and Veronica (see photos at the end of 3 woman in different poses)
I also got to meet carolines new little baby Nina who I had never met and see her eldest Amy again.what a delight they are. It is all the friends that I miss so much that make these trips so special. Seeing my friends ,Steven and Veronicas, daughter Sarah for the first time since she was 3 months old was very emotional for me. I had missed so much of her babyhood but she was so adorable and I miss her so much :(
Gav and Caths new little Jasper was adorable and their eldest Max can just melt your heart . he is adorable. I heard many a person say " I want a Max"
Clive and Niccis new little Hannah was the sweetest little baby and thier oldest Joshua is the most gentle soul. We had such fun together and Lily got to make some little friends. It was so special.
Of course the most important thing was my Mum and Dad having a magical , special time with their grandaughter. I think it was that. They spoiled her rotten and had her laughing and having such fun. they sang songs and did shows. they dressed up and made beaded necklaces and bracelets. They played in tents and swam in the pool. Every meal time they set her place with her wine. which was red grape juice in a sherry glass. she did stickering and went shopping and painted and drew and swang...
Her Uncle Andrew got to have some great fun with her too which I was so happy about and in the week off they were running around much better.
Lily got some little pet names whilst out there too. Amy christened her buggy and Sarah asked (a lot) for lila. I think being the oldest most of the time she drew a lot of attention.
We attended uncle Paul's Christmas party in the 2 week period before Christmas . I have such magical memories of going to a similar one when I was a child. The rotaract run it and proceeds go to charity. This one was held on groot constantia wine farm. shortly after arriving we stood in the queue to get onto the tractors with trailers that were filled with hay bales. They took us up the hill to the magic castle where the party is held. Upon arriving you throw hay at each other as though your life depends on it and then spend the next 3 hours trying to dig it out of your pants. this is of course a great hit with children who will pelt you with the stuff until your hayfever blasts up to unbearable and breathing is useless.
after this we settled down to a welcome and then Noddy and friends arrived with ice creams. We had our packed picnic supper and ice cream wafers and bid farewell to noddy. We then marched with a marching band and sang Christmas carols .
Then the magic begins. we sing father Christmas's favorite Christmas carol, silent night, after we have blown out all the lights that have been surrounding the castle. when everything is quiet and dark we hear the faint sound of sleigh bells. at this point lily was so overwhelmed with anticipation that she covered her eyes. With a firework bang Santa finally arrives on the top of the castle. To see Lily's face was just amazing. she could not believe he had actually arrived!
He came down and we called the fairy who ran around turning on the lights again. this was another feat that amazed lily and she has spent the weeks following running around with her wand wooshing it and "putting on" lights.
All was well until her name was called and we went up to to fetch her gift. she then decided she was very , very frightened of Santa and I had to pick her up. what followed has led me to say a silent prayer that Kristian does not use my camera properly. ..so I pick her up and we arrive at Santa's side. Cue a lot of "ho ho ho hello Lily have you been a good girl this year?" Yes Santa her mum says and then as there is a professional photographer there I kneel down with 15 kg child to be in photo. Lily buries her head in my shoulder and then it happened..I tried to get up. Knees buckle, and SANTA must help me up. Mortified is not even a word I can use.
Besides my embarrassment at father Christmas picking me up off the floor it was the most magical evening and one I hope to repeat .
We had a lovely Christmas party for the kids at Veronica's house as well. She had gone to so much effort putting all the toys out and hiring a lovely bouncy castle for us. Everyone bought a plate of something yummy and Santa's helper Uncle Steven dressed up terrifying most of the kids ,especially his own daughter. And leading most of the adults to be rolling around the floor in laughter. I don't think it will be anything he repeats.
in between all that Christmas fun we had lovely times at the beach and lunches out and all round good fun.
Christmas day was so great. Lily was absolutely , unbearably excited especially after the night before when she heard the sleigh bells when she was in the bath and then the fairies left her some new pajamas to wear on Christmas eve. She was entranced by her gifts all wrapped under the tree and Santa had left her a letter and eaten some of his mince pie and drank some 'whiskers"
she got a sizzling kitchen to make us food with and a princess dress up outfit as well as a fairy outfit with proper ballet shoes. other bits and bobs were in her stocking as well. pretty , pretty stuff because that's what she likes.
After pressie opening with tea and shortbread we started making the lunch and having showers. Our good friend Carol arrived to have lunch with us. On the menu was a prawn cocktail with avo followed by duck with an apricot stuffing , gammon and side of salmon. roast potatoes , bean salad , ruby coleslaw and pasta salad with all the condiments.
for pud I make a boozy British trifle which I thought was outstanding. to drink we had the fabulous pongratz. the rose edition and a white chenin blanc and blanc du noir.
fully stuffed and exhausted we settled down to watch enchanted which lily had got for Christmas.
after resting we went over to Steven and Ron's in the evening for traditional games evening. Its so much fun and this year was no different with us playing on the PlayStation. singstar and the buzz quiz. Sang our hearts out we did. well actually most of us did whilst I sing in a very tiny, controlled voice...who knew
We ended our holiday with a trip to Simonstown to boulders beach. Its my very favorite beach not only because the penguins swim with you but because its so secluded and safe and pretty.
The rest after that is the goodbyes which I tend to block out. Suffice to say I loved seeing everyone and we had the best holiday together. So if I saw you once or several times ..thank you for making my year!
having wine with uncle Andrew
